December Holiday Training 2016

Day 1:

For today's training, I found it very beneficial. I got the chance to improve my drills and even learn new ones. Even though I find today quite tough, the training has really helped me. My CL's were extremely patient when teaching us the new drills and their demonstrations were very clear. For the campcraft segment, I got to learn a bit about flag staff today as well as tentage. Even though I was in the campcraft competition, until today, I still did not really know why we did certain things a certain way. For example, I was not aware that the v shape on the outer sheet could help raindrops flow easily onto the ground. Thus, I found today very fruitful.

-Jasyln (NPCC), 10th Batch

Today's training was even tougher than before as the Sec 2 squad's last training was quite some time ago but we managed to pull through the various difficulties that we experienced. We learnt new drills, brushed up on our basic drills and started to synchronise more as a squad. We had our first ever changing parade with the girls competing with the boys and learned a few tips and tricks from our cadet leaders. I especially liked the campcraft session as I finally got to clear almost all my doubts regarding tentage. It was a refresher for most of us and a new thing to learn for the rest. Besides tentage, we also learned about the flag staff and its' different components. All in all, it was a fulfilling training session as a lot of us learned and understood more things than usual.

-Alisha (NPCC), 10th Batch

Today during cca, it was tiring but I've learnt many new things such as campcraft like flagstaff's logistics and building up a tent. It was tiring but this training had taught me a lot as we had our changing parade and this was our first time trying it out. I've realized during changing parade, we need our sense of urgency too so that we can change faster. I'm happy that I've learnt a lot during today's cca

-Hiew teng (NPCC), 10th Batch

Today during Npcc holiday training we learnt a lot of things. We first practiced our drills to perfect it. However it was very difficult as some of us were not so energetic and could not execute the drills properly. We also did not say the timing together and loudly. Hence I think we have to compromise within our squad first before we execute the drills. We also learnt how to stay resilient and endure as we had to do difficult drills. After the drills section, we changed into our Pt kit and exceeded our time limit. We need to help each other with their uniforms to fall in faster in order to not exceed the time limit. After that we had our camp craft session when we learnt some knots and lashings. It was very fun. After that to energise ourselves, we did some songs and cheers with our sirs and ma'ams. We needed to improve on our volume for that session. Overall, the training was tough yet worth.

-Rishika (NPCC), 11th Batch

I find that this training is very important for the squad as we were recapping out campcraft and drills, for our upcoming promotion test, which we forgotten after a long break. Our CLs also pointed out errors for us to look out for. I feel that our squad did not give our 100% during training and we should be more alert. I learn to be more resilient and have confidence. I want to thank the sirs and ma'ams for helping us prepare for the test.

-Jia Wei (NPCC), 10th Batch

Day 2:

Today, we learnt about the rifle drills. We were though about the parts of the rifle and the way to hold it properly in sedia, senang di-ri and rusok senjata. After that, it was the campcraft section where we had to practice on the speed of pegging and tying the bowlines to the inner sheet and outer sheet. I was from the peggers group and it was fun. We had to challenge ourselves to beat our previous timing with efficient speed and with 45° and one palm distance away from the ground. About 1 hour before lunch break, we have had a song and cheers session which involve the whole unit. It was an enriching one as we would have time to bond with the secondary 1 as well. After the lunch break where we had CSI also known as Crime Scene Investigation. We had a lesson about it and did some hands-on activities later on. We were taught how to find a fingerprint using the white powder and the brush and to use a scotch tape to lift the fingerprint for further inspection. We used this technique later on for another activity where we had to deduce the culprit using the evidence at the crime scene. We also had the chance to interrogate the suspects. After all those, we had to present who did we suspect and tell how the scene when on.

-Bryne Yong (NPCC), 10th Batch

Today I have attend training and we started off with rifle drill, we learnt the basics for sedi-a and senang di-ri. We had to make sure that the magazine of the rifle is facing forward and we had to put the bark of the rifle behind the polish line for male and for women is behind the shiny part and the bark must touch the boots during the drills. We also learnt the parts of the rifle for example the pistol grip, the trigger guard and others. It was hard at first as it’s was my squad's first time doing rifle drills and we had difficulties , like we had to make sure that the muzzle have to touch the arm during senang di-ri but it was hard as the rifle was not accustomed to our height . After that, we had to do campcraft but during that time I was a casualty but Jeston sir gave me a string to tie some knots like bow line I had problem as I forgot how to tie a bowline during the holidays after I learnt to tie the knot I tried to tie it faster but fail as I was not able to tie it properly. Rebekah ma’am told us to calm down to ensure us not to mess up as we tie the knots after that the squad had to do some tentage but I was not there so I am not able to learn anything . After we had CSI which crime scene investigation after our lunch. During the CSI , Mr Loh teach us what is the goal for CSI ,which was the awareness on the need to capture the crime scene and the importance of taking good photos and manage self-expectations. The purpose for CSI was to make sure that the physical evidence can be preserved and collected to solve a crime from a crime scene. We learnt how to approach a crime scene for example attend to injured person in the crime scene as safety is top priority and even it’s though it may destroy the evidence. We also learnt was what a physical evidence for example a type of physical evidence is weapon like a knife. And it also may help police to solve the crime establish the motive of a crime, others like the nature of the crime scene and maybe the leads will lead to the person who is responsible for the crime. We also learnt how to collect physical evidence, one of the methods is fingerprint dusting/lifting which is we find the fingerprint of the person who did the crime and by dusting the item used and lifting a sample of the fingerprint from the item and which is sent to further investigation more in depth on the fingerprint and will show who did the crime from the fingerprint. After we had a hands on for the fingerprint method. We need to first dust it with either a brush with white powder or with magnetic fillings and after that finding the fingerprint with lifted it with a tape. After that we had an activities on a crime scene and we had to figure who is the person responsible for the crime in the end my squadmates did not figure it out as there was a lot of evidence and it confused us going into random conclusions. After today training we could have improved by doing more practice for example like the rifle drills if we keep trying we could do the drills more sharply and for the knot we could tie it even faster and for the CSI we learnt a lot of things which can people implied if one of the squadmates become a guy who works in the police department for crimes.

-Choon Hsiang (NPCC), 10th Batch

This holiday training make me feel more closer to my squadmates as we train together and on that day before our LCP test we were practicing and realizing during our test everyone was supposed to be a timer each so when I was timing the whole squad i realized I actually step out of my comfort zone a bit more . I was really nervous being the timer but in the end everything was okay. It was really fun training with my squadmates it was really an enjoyable training. We also bond with the sec 2 during the activity. I like the teamwork within my squad but we could care and help each other more. By helping each other more we could be a much better squad. Although the training was tough but I really appreciate all the sirs and ma'ams help. And I hope the next training our squad can be more bonded and execute the drills together as the squad, thanks for all the ma'ams and sirs who came back during the holidays to train us.

-Denese (NPCC), 11th Batch

Day 3:

It was the 2nd day of our LCP promotion test and many of our squadmates were worried as it was our first promotion test. We had to memorize the NPCC pledge, mission, vision and had to look up on the songs and cheers that would also be tested for the theory test. We also had to memorize knots and lashings for the campcraft test. The sirs and ma'ams were very helpful before the tests started and were very grateful. They helped us a lot throughout all the previous training and got us to where our squad is now.I had learned the knots, lashings, pledge, mission and vision before hand and the tests were not much difficult but forgot a few things that I revised on the day itself due to me being worried. Some of us had difficulties during the tests and some found the tests easy, but we gave it our all and did our best. After all the tests were finished, we had house system. It was a really great feeling as the stress was gone and everyone could have fun after the tests were over. In the end, the day had its ups and downs but it was an enjoyable experience.

-James Tan (NPCC), 11th Batch

It was indeed stressful for our squad as it was the first promotion test we had ever done, we had to memorize the Pledge, Vision, Mission and Motto for our Theory Test. Although we had sufficient amount of time to revise, we regretted not doing it earlier, and at such we regretted it. Sirs and Ma'ams were painstakingly coaching us for the drills and really pushing hard for us to pass our Lance Corporal Test. I am really grateful to have such Sirs and Ma'ams, coaching since April and seeing us grow. At first, from time to time, our squad didn't take much effort to serious in campcraft, but during the past trainings, it helps us to know the importance of campcraft, therefore, during our Lance Corporal Test, we immediately tied the instructed knots and lashings within the time given. Although some of our squad members didn't manage to tie the knots or lashings within the time given, we encourage each other to do better next time round. Last but not least, House System. It was really fun, enjoying and it allows us to relax after the Lance Corporal Test, we also had a great time bonding with our CLs and CIs as well as our Secondary 2s. Overall, Holiday Training was indeed a very fun and interesting experience for us.
