National Day Parade 2016

For my first time participating in the National Day Parade, I am very honoured to be the flag escort as it is a very rare and prestigious opportunity. I have learnt slow marching and steps of folding the flag from participating in this event. Some challenges that I had faced was the synchronization with the people holding the other sides of the flag. It was hard maintaining the tension of the flag as our slow marching steps had to be the same distance. It was also hard to maintain our body balance during the slow march as we had to stand with one foot and glide with the other. I had the opportunity to work with National Cadet Corps and Red Cross Youth for the National Day Parade and it was quite fun. The event was a great chance to work with other uniform groups and having the experience of how it is like to be in an actual parade. Although the flag escorts would only be in the parade for a few minutes, we still gave in all our best to make it a good parade.

As part of one of the cadets that participated in the National Day Parade for our school’s 10th anniversary National Day celebration, I am glad that I took part. It was a very meaningful experience as apparently, National Police Cadet Corps will be hosting the parade next year. As part of my squad, I learnt that when hosting the parade, all instructions must be given out clearly to the leader of all contingents and also organise the whole parade beforehand so that it will not look as messy as this year’s National Day Parade training. It means that everything was planned out carefully and clearly. I hope that the next National Day Parade would be more successful than this year’s parade.

I am very honoured to be in a parade. I want to thank the sirs and ma'ams for giving me this opportunity to give a spotlight for me to shine. National Day Parade was a tiring yet fruitful experience for me. I learnt many things. One of them is definitely to endure until the end and not giving up halfway because as a wise man once said, “Giving up halfway does not get you anywhere”. Therefore, I did not give up even though I wanted to. On the actual day, it was quite scary and I was very nervous as there were many people staring so I got a little stage fright especially when people from my class were calling me. I could not control myself and I lost it a little by laughing. Other than that, the parade was a little messy at the start as I could not hear the parade commander’s voice and for the march off the drumbeat was messed up because it was not consistent which made me confused but overall the parade was good and the speech was just nice.
